Proficiency    Based   Learning

PBL

Students are assessed on their proficiency for certain standards frequently during the quarter.

Scores for each standard are given on a 1-4 scale.  The following is a summary of what levels in proficiency scales might look like:

1-the student can show they know the standard with help.

2-the student is beginning to understand the basics of the standard.

3-the student understands the material and has achieved mastery of the standard.

4-the student can apply the learning to their lives, can create something using the knowledge, and can draw inferences from the knowledge.

Not sure what their proficiency is?  Scores will be uploaded into Gradebook.  Copies of the proficiency scales will be posted in the classroom so that students can get to the next level of understanding.  Feel free to ask for copies of Proficiency Scales.

This year we are participating in Proficiency Based Learning (PBL).  The idea behind PBL is to give students a score on what they know and not what they have, in a sense, “done”.  We will have essential standards, taken from the Common Core and the Utah State standards, which will be scored each quarter.  I will teach the students the concepts in the essential standards and then they will be given opportunities to show, through a variety of means, that they have mastered the content.
